British Golden Ale - Saturday, March 28, 2020

Finally got a sack of malt. Not what I ordered, Proximity Malt from Wisconsin. Only 50 lbs. instead of 55, but getting free delivery makes up for the 5 lb. loss. I picked this up from Bomanville myself. Lots of traffic on the 115 when the PM said to stay home. I can brew 6 brews now, I have a batch of Pils malt to yet to brew.

Ingredients

10 lbs. Proximity Malt
1 lb. UCM
7 ozs. Biscuit - ( all I have )
34 g EKG at 60 min.
Nottingham Ale Yeast - ( high performance yeast )

Water Profile - Internet Recipe

I milled at notch 4. Notch 3 was not enough. When I doughed in it was really thick. If I get a stuck mash I will have to add a litre or 2 of sparge water. Stuck mash today. First time for this. Slow going, but I gotRdone. Tomorrow the same thing. Fine. Wort tastes great, clear too. Not much more to say during these covid 19 times. At least I am keeping busy, and this does keep me busy, and more...

Problems with the bung coming out. Had to use a #11 bung and hammer it in and move both carboys to the keezer and crash cool the temp. It was 72 F. I think I can brew this at around 62 F - 64 F if OBK delivers this yeast again. I will be prepared next time.

April 2 - Seems done. The pdf on this yeast said it could be done in 4 days. Not sure I want to keg it
yet though. May lift it out and install an air lock to see what is going on. Should check
gravity and keg in a few days? Maybe, but not in a hurry to drink this except to see how it
tastes as I haven't brewed this style in 15 years.

                                               GELATIN ON APRIL 5

Checked on April 8 and it is clear or close to it. Carbing up and will not transfer to another keg. Saving C02. Should phone around to see if I can do an exchange even though they are supposed to be closed.

                                                               TASTE

Yes, it is early so it will get better in a week or two. To much of a biscuit malt flavour. 7 ozs. changed everything and not in a good way. Toss it when your other beer gets kegged. Yes, I have another on the way, but with Carastan malt. Hope it is better. Starting to fade a bit, so in time it might be okay.

                                                            Tossing Out? No.

Seems to be losing some of the harsh biscuit malt taste. Still there, but not as strong. It has been 2 weeks since I kegged it. Still, will not brew it again because I am using the EKG hops for my English Mild beer which I should of brewed in the first place.
