4 Dog Pub Ale No. 5 - Conical - Tuesday, September 29, 2020
13 Gallons
Another IPA but going back to the lighter side. This will be the last one for awhile as I am changing to simple Blonde Ales which always tasted good like 20 years ago. Nope I am not. My Blonde Ale has a funny taste. No idea where that came from. Working on my Kolsch, so hoping it may be a better beer.

I am having no luck with these latest brews. Always starts off good but always ends up tasting awful. No idea why. This is just a brew to get rid of my ingredients in mason jars.
US-05 pitched at 5:30 am
I rehydrated the yeast this time to see if there is any difference to the lag time. It is a pain in the ass, so if there is no difference, not doing it again. It is fermenting, but not blowing out the hose. The Conical ring must be loose, I did tighten it but no bubbles. Done.
Day 4 - Slow and steady at 66 F.
Day 5 - Slowed down a lot but on schedule.
Day 7 - Really slowed down. Turned off fridge and letting it rise a bit to finish. Keg on day 12 or so.
Day 8 - Seems to be done. No air lock activity but will let it sit until Oct. 11 when I get a chance to
keg it.
Kegged on October 13
I like this beer. Lots of Chinook hop flavour, but yes, it may fade as most of them have. They were in darker beers and I always ended up tasting a heavy amount of dark grains, but didn't use a lot this time.
Ended up with 82% efficiency on notch 3. I ended up with 65% efficiency in my Blonde Ale. Why does the Robobrew just suck on efficiency when I recirculate the mash and do not do that with this system?
Dry hopped in the keg on Sunday Oct. 18. Added 3 plus ounces from the mason jar in a sanitized muslum bag. As usual, beer in the non-cleared keg has a different taste every day. It had a real strong cloying taste a couple of days ago, but seems okay now.
Transferred the dry hopped keg to another one.
It took a couple of litres to get clear or not pea soup beer before I transferred it. The taste was absolutely nothing but hops and a strong bitterness taste too. All of that was due to the 3 plus ounces of Chinook in the bag at the bottom. I will add gelatin soon and filter it to get practice on the filtering process. I hope to never get a cardboard taste doing this. I definitely will stop the filtering and sample it. If I detect any cardboard taste, stop it and clean up and never do it again. I will run 5 gallons of distilled water through it just like the Vin Bon guy says to do. I did not filter this because I didn't have any filters.
Sample on Oct 24
First keg was fine in the afternoon and then at night the cloying part was back. Jesus, what is with this beer? Carbing up the dry hopped keg now although why?
