Cavan Uncommon - Friday, August 31, 2018 - RoboBrew
Maiden Voyage with my new RoboBrew electric brewery. I cleaned it with oxiclean, rinsed well and did some research for recipes. Not a lot out there, so I went with Promash with 75% efficiency. Be nice to get higher than that. This is a delicate system and I have to look after it because there are a lot of pieces that go in this and it would be easy to lose or break them. I set my total volume for 7.5 gallons. It says it is 35 L, but 30 L is almost to the top of the unit. 28 L is where I want to be at the beginning of the boil, give or take a litre or so. I had to split my usual recipe in half so that is why I am a bit short of grain. Elements work. Will take almost an hour to heat up 28 L of 67 F water to 167 F. My mash will only be around 5 - 6 gallons, so it will most likely be around 45 min. I added 5 g to the 60 min. addition and 7 g to the 0 addition because of the hop sock lower utilization. I have no evidence that I needed to do that, just did it. Will taste it and if it is too much, I will go with the original recipe.

BREW DAY NOTES
Everything went well, but I didn't really save any time compared to my old system. Very easy and no lifting. The malt was heavier than I thought it would be, but no where as heavy as lifting shit from my old system. This unit will be just perfect in the years to come when I am old and weak. I will definitely get a lift to help with the malt pipe in a few years. Brewing in a few days from now. Lots of trub though, but my hop sock may be the culprit here and not the whirlpooling. Will work on that. I lost my marbles!!! From the hop sock, have to take a note not to toss them out with the hops next time. If Promash says to set the mash water at 159 F, do it. Even if I am low, the 500 watt element has no problem raising the temp. Lose the extension cord because the connection was too hot to hang on to. I got lucky the unit didn't over heat. Turn on elements as soon as the mash is over. I am not concerned about saving time, but why not? I will learn stuff with every brew, I just have to write it down at the time for next brewday.
FERMENTATION NOTES
Today is Monday, 3 days later and it of course has really slowed down. Still bubbling about every 3 seconds or so. Will keg on Wed, Aug 12. Replaced the blow off water and it smelled normal. Sampled on Tues Sept. 4. No odd taste but it may get there as it was very bland and it is a toss up to where this beer is going. The bu was low and the hop aroma was low too. No wonderful carahell taste this time as it isn't a lager.
SAMPLED AGAIN ON SEPT. 8
Much better than on Sept. 6. Needs dry hopping. No after taste!!!! That is everything, at least for now. No funny and odd taste and that odd smell that was in my bitters is not there. Still not sure if I want to use 833 in these beers in the future. Price is almost the same, except for the DME. Most likely not, but will give it a shot sometime to see the difference. Maybe in early Dec. when I think I will brew another Pilsner, but on this system and not my big system. That will be stored in the basement for future use.
KEGGED WED SEPT. 12
Got the same odd taste which is unpleasant. Every brew had one thing in common. NOTTINGHAM YEAST. Done, tossing out my last 2 packs and will put this on hold for awhile as I am low on NB hops anyway. Will concentrate on Pilsners and only Pilsners. Added 56 g of Chinook to the keg for a day. Did something I guess, but that unpleasant taste is still there. This is brew #4 that has that taste. That has to stop. If I knew what was causing it, I would stop it or change what I am doing. Recipe? Ingredients? Process? Could be one or all of those.
