First Brew Blog

This is a homebrew blog. I will post my recipes, what's brewing? etc.. Since this is my first attempt at a blog, I will tell you about myself. I am a retired GM Oshawa, Ont. worker and live near Peterborough Ont. This blog will tell you what I am brewing and how they turn out. I am going to brew a Dry Stout tomorrow and an English IPA the day after. I am currently still drinking my summer ale ( 4% ). I haven't brewed since September, so I am a bit behind. I base most of my recipes on Jamil Zainaseff and John Palmer's book "Brewing Classic Styles". They are easy and straight forward. My recipes reflect on what I have on hand for ingredients at the time. I am all electric and brew in my garage until November or when turns cold.

Here is my dry stout recipe which will be brewed on Oct. 16/08.

14 gallons
3 Dog Dry Stout
O.G. - 1.045
F.G. 1.010
% - 4.2
37.8 - SRM
43.4 - IBU

Canada Malting 2-row.................................15 lbs. ( 62.5 % )
Flaked Barley..................................................6 lbs. ( 25% )
Roasted Barley................................................3 lbs. ( 12.5 )
EKG Pellet Hops...........................................140 grams
Nottingham Dry Yeast...................................15 grams

I usually end up with 11 gallons of wort. I have a 14 gallon SS conical which will soon be put into use since the weather is cooler. I use a temperature controled freezer which I ferment in during the summer months. Now it is used for a bright tank and conditioning kegs. It only holds 6 kegs, so I CPBF when I run out of kegs. I buy my dry yeast in bulk, ( 500 grams ) and also my EKG pellet hops. ( 5 lbs. ) The EKG hops are now over $200.00 for 5 lbs. A big increase in the last year or so. I paid $57.00 for 5 lbs. in Sept. 07.

"Homebrew, the real "GOOD STUFF".
